What can go in a dumpster
Most household junk and construction debris is fine. A short list of items can’t go in, or costs extra to dispose of. If you’re not sure about something, text us a photo.
Usually OK
- Household junk and clutter
- Furniture and bulky items
- Appliances without refrigerant (washers, dryers, stoves)
- Construction and demolition debris
- Lumber, cabinets and trim
- Drywall and flooring
- Roofing shingles
- Yard debris and brush
Not allowed, or extra charge
- Liquids
- Paint
- Chemicals and hazardous materials
- Batteries
- Tires
- Electronics
- Appliances with refrigerant
- Asbestos (including asbestos pipe)
- Fluorescent bulbs and light fixtures
- Pressurized cylinders and tanks
- Dirt
- Concrete, rocks and gravel
Any of these found in a load will be subject to additional charges.
Loading tips
- Keep it level with the top. Nothing should stick up above the walls. We can’t safely haul an overfilled dumpster.
- Heavy items first, spread evenly. It keeps the load balanced and leaves room for bulky things on top.
- Break things down. Flatten boxes and take furniture apart to fit more in.
- Watch the weight on heavy jobs. Shingles and wet debris add up fast. Anything over the limit is $80 per ton.
Where do the banned items go?
Paint, chemicals, batteries, electronics and bulbs can usually be dropped off at your county’s household hazardous waste or recycling program. [Add links to the St. Joseph and Elkhart County drop-off sites.]
